Creating a Position

​Managers are responsible for structuring the duties and responsibilities assigned to positions via position descriptions. A position description should describe the essential duties of the position, knowledge and skills required to successfully perform in the position, and the minimum experience, training and/or education necessary to be considered for employment into the position.

It will also be used to prepare interview questions that are related to the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully perform in the position.
Managers can work with department fiscal officers and HR when submitting new position descriptions to IU HR for review. IU HR determines classification and salary approval via the Create Position EDoc. After IU HR has approved the new position, the recruitment process may be initiated.

Position Classification
Position Classification is a structured approach to salary administration. Classification is all about jobs and positions and how they fit within the organizational structure.

The four main staff employee groups are below. IU is moving toward a university-wide approach for Service and Support Staff in the next few years.
  • Professional classification is university-wide
  • Service classification is university-wide
  • Support classification varies by campus
  • Temporary (formerly Hourly) classification is university-wide​

Compensation Programs
