Importance of Performance Feedback

Performance management, or people management, is key to an effective supervisor-employee relationship; it is a framework for conversations throughout the year to foster open, honest, two-way communication.  

The Indiana University School of Medicine leadership supports this best practice in human resources and encourages you to implement performance management in your units.  The benefits of a fully integrated people management process result in enhanced organizational performance, highly engaged staff, better retention, improved productivity, and increased accountability. ​

Pe​rformance Planning & Evaluation Timelines

In order to facilitate a performance feedback process that encourages looking at the entire year of performance. Going forward, our cadence will for feedback will move as follows. Additional resources can be found on the Performance at IU site. (IU CAS login required to access performance resources) * 

January 2022 – Employees complete their self-assessment of performance. 
February 2022 – Managers complete their assessment of performance incorporating employee self-assessment. 
March 2022 – Managers and Employees meet together to review the performance feedback. 

Regular Performance Feedback
Discuss the following with employees throughout the year. Meaningful feedback is: Specific, timely and/or immediate, focused on behavior or performance, intended to help, authentic, involves an action plan, well documented. Please retain a copy in your supervisor or departmental files. Performance Feedback Coaching Sessions for Managers

IUSM Human Resources is hosting 1:1 virtual coaching sessions for managers who would like tips on how to address staff performance discussions objectively. If you are interested in a 15-minute discussion with a HR Business Partner, register at the link below.

  • Friday, March 4, 2022 from 12pm-2pm
