Importance of Training and Development

Professional growth of staff members is critically important to IU School of Medicine. Successful employee performance relies heavily on effective training, and employee development can further both job performance and overall employee engagement.  

 
Training and development activities take many forms and can include: 
Attendance at training events (i.e., workshops, conferences) 
Hands-on learning with a supervisor or colleague
Self-guided learning (i.e., reading)
Soft skill development (i.e., communication, presentation, conflict management)
Technical skill development (i.e., coding, systems)
Receiving professional and career coaching 
Formal education (i.e., certificates, degrees)
Job shadowing with a colleague
Career and professional development planning
Expanding job duties
Mentoring 
Professional service (i.e., as part of an association) 

 
Employee development is a shared responsibility of management and the individual employee.  The rest of this section contains specific opportunities for both managers and employees to review and potentially take advantage of depending on the job-specific requirements, job level and employee goals. 

Required and Job-Specific Training Resources​

The IU E-Training Catalog ​provides a listing of and access to a number of online and in-person trainings, including those which may be required depending on your role with IU School of Medicine.  Please work with your supervisor to determine which sessions may be needed for your specific role.  

Required of all IU School of Medicine staff:
  • New Employee Compliance Orientation (NECO): Offered monthly, this in-person session covers compliance and reporting policies and procedures for all faculty, staff, and trainees of the schools that fall under University Clinical Affairs, comprised of the Schools of Dentistry, Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Public Health and Social Work.  As a new employee, you are required to attend this orientation within 90 days of your start date.   • HIPAA Privacy and Security Training: Required to be completed annually of all workforce members (including students, interns, residents and fellows), this online training provides an overview of HIPAA's (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) privacy and security requirements and education regarding access, use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI).   • FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) Tutorial: All faculty and staff are required to complete the FERPA tutorial every two years, which details FERPA regulations and IU policies and procedures related to the safeguarding and release of student information.  Access the tutorial and more on the IU FERPA page

  • Data Protection and Privacy Tutorial: This tutorial is intended to provide one with an understanding of the types of data IU collects and how it is classified, data handling responsibilities, and the basic privacy laws one must comply with as an employee of the university. Job-specific trainings, depending on your role, may include:

  • Campus Security Authority (CSA) Training: The Clery Act is a federal law that requires employees with particular roles and responsibilities to report knowledge of criminal incidents to the University in accordance with the reporting structure established for your campus. Anyone who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities is a campus security authority. At IU, Campus Security Authorities include, but are not limited to, the following: all police and security personnel; all Deans and faculty advisors to students; student affairs administrators.  If your role is designated as a Campus Security Authority, you will receive and email to your IU email account to complete the training annually.

  • Sexual Misconduct Course: Title IX is a federal law that requires employees with particular roles and responsibilities to report knowledge of incidents of sexual misconduct to the University in accordance with the reporting structure established for your campus. At IU, Responsible Employees include, but are not limited to, the following: instructors, including full-time professors, adjunct professors, lecturers, associate instructors, and others who offer classroom instruction or office hours to students; advisors; student affairs administrators; employees who work in offices that interact with students; and supervisors and university officials.  If your role is designated as a Responsible Employee, you will receive and email to your IU email account to complete the training annually.

  • IU Environmental Health and Safety training topics include:  
    • Anesthetic Gas Safety
    • Asbestos Awareness
    • Back Safety
    • Biosafety
    • Bloodborne and Infectious Disease Training
    • Laboratory and Animal Handling 

       
  • Financial Management Services (FMS) Trainings for Accounting & Finance Professionals The FMS training team provides IU staff with training on the Kuali Financial System (KFS), the Indiana University Information Environment (IUIE), Kuali Time, Payroll and Adjustment Vouchers in the Human Resources Management System (HRMS), and finance-related IU policies. Additionally, the FMS training team manages communications and user documentation for IU's financial and payroll systems. Browse the catalog at https://fms.iu.edu/training.

Emerging Leaders Program

The Emerging Leaders Program promotes professional growth and leadership skills to emerging leaders within IU School of Medicine.  This year-long, cohort-based leadership program creates a forum for staff members to build upon their existing leadership ability and potential.

B.E.S.T. – Basic Essentials of Supervision Training

This training series is designed to provide supervisors with information and resources to get accustomed to the IUPUI culture of supervising employees. Whether you're an aspiring, new or a seasoned supervisor, this series will allow you an opportunity to learn from the HR experts from various departments within the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. Here you have the opportunity to learn experientially through case studies, focus groups and networking from colleagues on campus. Organizational Excellence Program Trainings

The Organizational Excellence Program (OEP) consists of a number of training sessions on process improvement topics including Lean, project management, process evaluation, and visual management. This program is facilitated by the Office of Business Intelligence and Operational Excellence and is open to all School of Medicine staff and faculty. Faculty Affairs, Professional Development & Diversity Opportunities

The IU School of Medicine division of Faculty Affairs, Professional Development, and Diversity (FAPDD) facilitates numerous professional development opportunities each month, many of which are open to staff members of the school.  Topics are diverse and include faculty and leader guest speakers from the school, university, and community.  Please visit https://faculty.medicine.iu.edu/get-involved/events-list/ for current offerings.

Institute for Supervising Excellence 

IUPUI's Institute for Supervising Excellence is a leadership program designed to further supervisors' excellence in navigating everyday responsibilities and in leading others. While competing the program, participants will build upon existing skills and gain new tools and approaches. This program is designed for any staff or faculty in a manager or supervisory role.  The program is yearlong with in-person sessions once a month. For more information, visit the Institute for Supervising Excellence page.​

Healthy IU Programs 

Healthy IU is Indiana University's employee wellness program.  Healthy IU offers numerous services and programs, including workshops ranging topics on lifestyle and self-care, mind/body well-being, physical activity, work + life and more. For more information, visit the Healthy IU page.

IT Training 

University Information Technology Services (UITS) delivers numerous courses and certificate series which are offered at no cost to staff members.  Offering topics include Microsoft Excel Essentials, Microsoft Access Essentials, Web Creation, Media Design, Microsoft Office Productivity. Skillsoft

IU Libraries partners with Skillsoft to make available comprehensive training services with many options to customize your experience.  IU students, faculty, and staff have no-cost access to the online books and videos available in Skillsoft's learning management and delivery system, Skillport, through IU Libraries.
